Contracts and Fire Fees

Fire Fees and Contracts

There has apparently been some misunderstanding concerning the Fire Fees for residents that live outside the Kimball Town Limits. At any time if you have questions, you can contact the department via email at fire@kimballwv.gov
The fees have not changed in many years. The fee itself is the same fee that residents inside the town limits pay. There is an additional charge mandated by State Law that adds a fee based on the assessed value of your property. This fee is not the same amount you pay for your property taxes to the county. It is based on the tax rate for citizens inside the town limits approved by the state auditor and the assessed value of your home.
Here is an example:
If your property is valued at $10,000. You would divide that by 100 and then multiply it by the class of property you have.
$10000÷100=100
100*.25=25
Base Fire Fee $25.00
Tax based fee $25.00
Total Fee would be $50.00 per year.
This equalized what citizens in the town pay after they have paid their taxes to the county.
This is based on a law passed by the legislature not the town council. The council voted years ago to allow contracting outside the city limits. The contracts and all of this information are available on the town website at https://kimball.wv.gov.

The town has not enforced this requirement for several years, but due to the increased operating costs have no choice but to do so. We have not billed for fire fees in the past to citizens outside the town limits but advertise when the fees are due which is October 1 each year. If you would like for us to send you a bill, please let us know. We will need your name, address and assessed value and class of your property from your tax ticket. If our citizens don't pay the fees, we cannot maintain the level of service we strive to provide. We appreciate your continued support. You can also pay these fees online at https://kimball.wv.gov

The Kimball Town Council has voted to accept contracts from residents which live outside the town limits for fire protection pursuant to WV State Code 8-15-3. The Kimball Fire Department provides those services within the Kimball Rural Fire Protection District. The District includes the communities of Landgraff, Vivian, Bottom Creek, Carswell, Belcher Mountain, Superior and Maitland. Under the law, citizens wishing to receive the service are required to enter into a contract with the Town for fire protection. The fee is the same fee charged to the residents who reside in the town plus one hundred percent (100%) of the annual tax levied for current municipal purposes upon property within said Town of like assessed valuation to the property covered by this agreement.

All fees are due on October 1 and expire on September 30 of the following year.

The fee for residents within the town is $25.00 per year for residential and $50.00 for commercial. Residential means that the person who owns the property actually resides in the dwelling. If the property is rented, that is considered commercial.
